La punta de San Juan de Marcona, considerada el más importante refugio del pingüino de Humboldt en el país, pues en sus 54 hectáreas de acantilados, playas y pequeñas ensenadas alberga a 2.500 ejemplares de los 4.000 que existen en todo el litoral del Perú, será declarada reserva guanera junto con 26 islas y 11 puntas, informó El Comercio.com.
Se trata de una propuesta desarrollada por el Instituto de Recursos Naturales (Inrena) y diversos especialistas que en esta semana obtendría la luz verde del Ejecutivo.
Esa declaratoria, que abarca desde las costas de Lambayeque hasta el extremo sur de Ilo (Moquegua), permitirá que se establezca una protección legal firme de los recursos marinos existentes en las zonas señaladas, así como el uso racional de los recursos existentes, aseguró la investigadora Patricia Majluf, quien desde hace 30 años propone la necesidad de integrar este conjunto de islas y puntas en la reserva nacional del sistema de islas, islotes y puntas guaneras.
En la punta de San Juan de Marcona habitan en forma armónica una diversidad de aves guaneras, como el pelícano, guanay, zarcillo, guanero, chuitas y piqueros; el pingüino de Humboldt y una importante población de lobos finos y chuscos que otorgan a este ecosistema características únicas a lo largo de la zona costera del país.
UNA ZONA INTANGIBLE
"A dos kilómetros de estas costas se encuentra el mayor afloramiento marino del mundo, compuesto por nutrientes y praderas de algas que tienen un ciclo de productividad alto. Todo ello permite la presencia de importantes cardúmenes de anchoveta y otras especies pelágicas que sirven a su vez de alimento de aves y mamíferos", refirió Majluf.
Según la especialista, es realmente necesario proteger estas islas, las puntas, las dos millas de mar adyacentes a estas formaciones, la biodiversidad existente en la zona y las praderas de algas. "Esta declaratoria no solo confiere a la punta de San Juan de Marcona la calidad de zona intangible y protegida, sino que permitirá continuar las tareas de investigación en el lugar, donde se ha logrado que el pingüino se reproduzca hasta tres veces al año", afirmó.
